Hello, I’m Elizabeth Shih. I specialize in teaching economic immigrants and internationally educated (second language) academics like you English as a Second Language (ESL). Its four main skill areas are listening, speaking, reading and writing. By enhancing your knowledge of these areas, you can sell your services or products to our broader community; or you can better publish your research and receive promotion by tenure.
Born and raised in Saskatoon (earning my BA from the U of S), I gained a graduate education in English literature and language in Southern Ontario (MA, ABD), before returning to Saskatoon to work as a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL), and as an editor.
Now, as a language teacher and an editor, I contribute to Saskatoon’s vibrant academic and business communities, by offering a “suite of services” in the English language.
As an ESL teacher, I have versatility from gaining 10 years of experience as a professional copywriter, and nearly 20 years as an editor, that complement my academic education. I have written and published peer-reviewed articles, book reviews and newsletters in both academic and business journals.
I have also gained teaching experience at two universities in Southern Ontario and through local companies and not-for-profit organizations in Saskatchewan, such as the Praxis School of Entrepreneurship (PSE) and the Truly Alive Youth & Family Foundation, Inc. (TAYFFI).
For the past nearly five years, I have taught and customized classes for students on English grammar, structure, conversation, pronunciation and accent modification (ESL). I teach both online (via Zoom) and in-person classes.
To internationally educated academics, newcomer entrepreneurs or employees: Do you want to succeed in sharing your knowledge and skills, in service to our community?
My goal is for your contributions to be heard, read and appreciated, through your strong English language skills. By studying or working with me, you can bridge the gap that separates you from native English speakers in your field: Our community needs to better understand and benefit from how much you have to share!
Non-native English speaking academics provide the backbone of Canadian universities. And the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) tells us that seventy-five percent (75%) of Saskatchewan’s economy is built on small businesses (with five or fewer staff). Such businesses are often spearheaded by newcomer entrepreneurs, like you. . . . It’s long past due to for you to shine by sharing your remarkable knowledge, skills and cultural diversity!
While I love teaching and editing in the English language, I also appreciate whimsy and humour, along the way. This website reflects a touch of that irreverence and fun. I hope it might inspire your own creativity, as you build your English language skills . . . .
